17 Simple Practices to Live Your Best Life

Everyone wants to live a happy life, but many don't know how or where to begin. Many people expect a massive life change to achieve this, but all they need is to make a few small, intentional changes. The following are the top fifteen things you can do to make your life happier.

1. Take Daily Walks

Slowing down and walking every morning or evening can help you relax your mind and become much happier. Sometimes, when you feel irritable or annoyed for no apparent reason, your body might just need a few minutes to reset and recenter. Taking a walk can help you feel significantly better.

2. Give Yourself Grace

You don’t need to be harsh on yourself all the time. Many people go through life weighed down with worry that they aren’t living up to the expectations they’ve placed on themselves. But once you can give yourself grace when you’ve made a mistake, it isn’t the end of the world. Your life will be forever changed.

3. Slowing Down at Work

The hustle culture has led many to believe that working nonstop is the key to success. However, prioritizing important tasks could make your life much easier. There’s no need to respond to every email right away or constantly make sure everything is up to date. It’s okay if some things have to wait.

4. Changing As Soon As You Get Home

After working for several hours, most people want to sit back and relax when they get home. Many don’t even make it to their room to change. While it might seem like a good idea to take a few minutes to calm down before changing out of your work clothes, sitting at home in your work clothes can prevent you from truly relaxing once you get home. Swapping out your work clothes for something soft and comfortable when you get home can make a huge difference.

5. Using a Smartwatch Alarm

Your attitude while waking up sets the tone for the rest of your morning. Most people use their cellphone alarm as a way to help them get out of bed. But imagine waking up to a slight vibration on your wrist instead of the loud noise of an alarm or the sound of a phone vibrating against the nightstand. Loud cellphone alarms can be such a jarring way to wake up that switching to a gentle smartwatch alarm can significantly improve your morning mood.

6. Creating a Bedtime Routine

Bedtime routines aren't just for kids. Creating a night routine can help you relax and have a good night's sleep. People who struggle to fall asleep typically find it much easier to settle down at night when their body is used to a set nighttime routine and have a better chance of getting a solid night’s rest.

7. Notice the Little Things Around You

There’s so much beauty in the world that goes unnoticed because people consider themselves too busy to take a second to observe the wonders of the natural world. Take time to slow down and enjoy the little things, like the sounds, the colors, the breeze, or the way the sunlight filters through the trees, because the beauty in nature shouldn’t be taken for granted.

8. Adopt a Relaxing Hobby

Every individual should have at least one hobby that’s solely for enjoyment, even if it’s only a few times a week. You should schedule time to take part in a relaxing hobby. This could be a solo activity or a shared activity with a loved one; the important thing is to set aside time specifically for having fun.

9. Have Meaningful Conversations

Social circles greatly impact a person’s mindset and outlook on life. Spending time with negative people won’t inspire any positivity. Instead of gossiping with friends and having negative conversations, try speaking joy into your life by having positive conversations.

10. Practicing Forgiveness

Forgiveness is hardly ever beneficial to someone who’s done wrong. But it is necessary to move on in life and not carry around hurt from previous relationships. Practicing forgiveness as a daily morning ritual helps create an overall positive outlook on life and relationships. Forgiveness is hard, but you want to learn to forgive rather than regret later.

11. Practice Positive Self-Talk

It’s often easier for people to compliment others than to compliment themselves. However, speaking positive and encouraging statements to yourself throughout the day will completely change your life. Many people find that spending a few minutes a day saying positive affirmations while looking in the mirror is the best way of practicing positive self-talk. Speaking light and positivity into your life every day will make you a much happier person over time.

12. Give Yourself Permission to Relax

Who said it’s wrong to relax in your pajamas on the weekend? Many people go through life with this self imposed pressure to constantly be active and productive. But you don't need to be active every minute of the day. Give yourself the chance to relax and unwind every once in a while.

13. Start Your Day With One Small Accomplishment

If you can start your day positively, it will likely continue throughout your day. Even if it might seem insignificant at first, try to start your day by doing one small thing, like making the bed or unloading the dishwasher, to help you feel like you've already knocked one item off your to-do list.

14. Getting the Hard Things Out of the Way

Saving the best for last is a saying that can be applied to life in an interesting way. Most people put off difficult or tedious tasks until the last minute, but getting them out of the way first makes your day much better. If there are bills to be paid or unpleasant chores that need to be done, try to get those done as soon as possible. Once you’re done, this will leave the rest of your day open for the things you enjoy.

15. Practice Daily Gratitude

Life has its many challenges and difficulties, but there is always something to be grateful for. Set aside time every day to practice gratitude. You could try journaling, making lists of the things you’re grateful for, or simply meditating on the good things that transpired throughout the day. A few minutes of daily gratitude can make a huge difference in your life.

16. Ignore the Haters

If people don’t support you or speak to you negatively, it’s time to say goodbye to them. You don’t need them in your life if they give you stress. They are not worth worrying about since you have yourself to worry about first. Learn to walk away and ignore them.

17. Be Yourself

You shouldn’t change yourself because someone doesn’t like you. You are your own person, with character and personality that make you yourself. Just because people don’t like one thing about you doesn’t mean you have to change to please them.
